India's Ancient & Traditional Agricultural Practices - By Satish Gadde

Traditional farming ideas

Cattle help immensely in enrichment of soil

About

India that is Bharat is a country of villages and the farmer is the backbone.
Agriculture sector creates employment to larger number. Moreover, agriculture is more dependent on the cycle of monsoons. Now the rains are unpredictable. This might be due to ecological imbalances, in addition, the greed among farmers. The farmers and the land both become poorer and poorer. The farmer is being trapped in a debt cycle and the soil is losing its fertility. Organic farming practices is one and only solution to get out of all these miseries.  Against this backdrop, when we closely examine the current traditional practices that are being followed very successfully one will certainly bestow his/her attention to realise the underlying truth.

BOVINE MASTITIS
A deadly disease all over the world

Bovine mastitis is the persistent, inflammatory reaction of the udder tissue due to physical trauma or microorganisms infections. Mastitis, a potentially fatal mammary gland infection, is the most common disease in  cattle

Prevention of
MASTITIS

It is observed that in Indian traditional farming where cattle is shifted to a new place now & then , there is no scope for deadly disease MASTITIS .
Free grazing of cattle & the effect of urine on soil keeps away harmful weed.
MASTITIS in cattle & weed in crops are controlled only by Indian Agriculture System because it is always precautionary.

Cattle are the basic component,  When labour got used to do sophisticated jobs, taking care of the cattle is a big problem. It is not so. We can overcome the problem like this. Part of the land is being kept vacant every season and the cattle is allowed to move about freely all over the vacant land. The land gets drenched with cattle urine and dung. In case the boarder land is not ours fencing is a must...Sufficient hay in the form of hayrick is stocked at a convenient corner so the cattle after grazing in the open field comeback to hayrick and enjoy taking as and when they need. This comes out of practice. One or two farm assistants can take care of the entire operation. During nights, the cattle are tied to a rope in a row. Every animal’s leg is provided with a belt rope, which is hooked to the big one at the other end.  This practice is repeated week after week shifting the simple pattern from one point to the other. The main motto is to enrich & cover the entire land that we have demarcated for the season.

When ploughing for cultivation in the alternative years the whole dung and urine are mixed up with soil providing good natural manure. By allowing the cattle to graze in the farm, the soil absorbs more. Natural manure from external source is not cost effective. The entire operation in two, three steps is time consuming. Allowing the calves to suck the milk to their hearts content is beneficial to the farmer. Calves grow fast and the immunity develops that keeps away from the normal diseases. The calves conceive at a considerably early age and the cattle grow in number.

The farmer gets yield from the produce and the cattle remain complementary. The cumulative benefits of the farm products and cattle make the farmer prosperous.
Right from the seedbed to harvesting, the sanctity of organic farming should be viewed with commitment. Chemical manures, fertilisers and pesticides are forbidden items as they turn the soil conditional. Repeatedly the soil craves for chemical fertilisers. To get rid of the evil effects caused by the application of such fertilisers is a task often goes in vain. Residual effects of the chemical fertilisers deposited in the soil can never be drained out.

Organic farmer depends on natural products like neem paste, neem cake etc. Manure prepared through wormy culture is also put to use. Cow urine is found to be an effective pest controller. With these, simple, cost effective age-old methods the farmer gets good organic farm products. These organic farm products remain far superior to the products available in the market. Some self-styled organic farmers resort to organic methods ignoring the erstwhile residual chemical deposits. This can be challenged only through proper tests and certification.
In some parts of the country, the farmers since decades are practicing organic farming. Theirs is a different clan. Such farmers should be identified and encouraged . Present day agriculture is on the support of ventilators. The irrigation system in many parts of the country is disturbed. This is due to unauthorised occupations.

In addition, in a democratic country like ours right from a petty politician to prime minister the vantage viewpoint is vote. To win elections, they resort to false promises, undue support, and unwarranted limitations. This leads to poor management of agriculture, which generates employment to more than 70% of the people.
ORGANIC FARMING: A SUCCESS FORMULA

The best way to inspire the fellow neighbouring farmers is to instil confidence in them. Farmers dependent on chemical manures and pesticides may get a few bags more. However, the produce is not directly proportional to the investment. Although the season farmers remain restless. Climatic vicissitudes keep them on their tows.

During rains and floods when the whole crop gets inundated under water the farmer turns helpless. The meagre compensation he receives is no consolation. The damage dampens the hopes of farmers expecting good yield. Under similar circumstances, the organic farmer acts boldly and confidently. The reasons are many. Because the resistance capacity in organic products is more. The produce withstands the vagaries of climate. The shelf life is more.
Organic methods if followed well...the crop needs minimum water and never becomes stale if heavy rainfall lashes. Lands entirely dependent on bore water, even when the power supply is limited do not starve. Moreover, in the fertile soil the water table always remains at a comfortable level. Switching back to traditional farming keeps the farming community in a better state than this. For this awareness, programmes are very essential.

ORGANIC PRODUCTS ARE HEALTHY- ORGANIC FARMERS ARE CONTENTED

Organic food products keep the family insulated from many illnesses and provide wonderful immunity. The essential minerals and salts support the body to lead a healthy life. No medicines. No frequent trips to doctors, clinics and labs. Lot of time is saved. Lot of money too. Life is added to years. On supporting drugs, years need not be added to life. Farmers, wedded to organic farming keep themselves away from greed. Contentment becomes a way of life. Attachment with cattle makes them friendly with fellow human beings as well as the cattle they feed and care for.The agriculture operations promote a beautiful and worth cherishing link between man and animal .Organic farming offers immense pleasure. The counter parts spend huge sums of money year after year, powerful, more powerful pesticides. Neither the food we consume nor the crop the farmers produce is wholesome.

In conclusion, all the concerned in the area of agriculture should feel that organic farming is given more impetus. Every one in the field should encourage for organic food is Sanjivani by any measure. We eat a lot every day. The consumption of the food available in the market indiscriminately turns the digestive system into a dustbin.

We are able to send satellites into space spending crores of rupees. We have been neglecting personal health and hygiene. A little care and consumption of organic food turn our body temple into a beautiful flower vase.

WHAT IS REGENERATIVE AGRICULTURE?

Regenerative agriculture is an approach to farming which aims to give back to the earth and leave it in a better place. It builds soil, increases biodiversity, improves water cycles and sequesters carbon. It’s really a way of farming that was traditional — prior to industrialization — we call it going back to a new way of farming.

Every farmer in our cooperative does the following:
 (a) Never use pesticides that strip the land of microorganisms.
(b) Use no-till planting techniques that keep root systems intact.
(c) Plant a variety of grasses, including sorghum, which has deep roots systems that help build organic matter. This biodiversity benefits the ecosystem and ensures that all animals have a well-balanced diet.
(d) Rotationally graze all animals. The cattle and chickens forage and fertilize in a symbiotic relationship that contributes to the productivity of the soil. They are moved over the land in strategic patterns, which include periods of intense multi-species grazing followed by long periods of rest. This process enhances fertility and ensures the land is not overworked.
